28 ACT EIGHT: Scene 2
28 ACT EIGHT: Scene 2
Akanji is sitting on a mat in his old small house back in the village, unknown to him, with a pack of his clothes beside him, waiting in vain for attendants who are to treat his blindness. But, after a while, not seeing or hearing anything, he cries out.
Akanji: [Still sitting] Anybody around? Risi, Risi. [no reply] Anybody around?
[He stands up groping about] Where am I?
[As he keeps shouting, Iya-Agba, who is taking her siesta when Risi and Sule come to
dump him, wakes up and wonders where the noise is coming from. She stands up and
moves outside and then discovers that the noise is coming from her old neighbour's
house, which has been shut for years, and also that the voice is that of her old neighbor
Akanji. She moves nearer and looks inside, then she sees Akanji groping about in the small
passage of the house and shouting.]
Iya-Agba: [Surprised] Akanji!
Akanji: [Startled] Who is that?
Iya – Agba: Akanji, it's me, Iya Agba, your neighbour. What happened, why are you groping about?
Can't you see?
[Akanji could not believe his ears.]
Akanji: Iya – Agba! Is it you? What I'm I doing here!? Don't tell me…
Iya-Agba: [cuts in] Yes, you are in your father's house which you left a long time ago [taking a clue from his lamentation]. Akanji, what did I tell you? The day I told you this, you thought I was cursing you. Can you see it now?
[Akanji, still groping about stopped and sat on the floor suddenly]
Akanji: Iya-agba, please help me send for Karimu immediately. Don't wait a second, please. [The woman quickly leaves for the sawmill in search of Karimu. The two later appear in his car and walk over to see Akanji, who is now calm and sober. Karimu is surprised to see his friend exactly the way the woman has told him. He sits quietly beside him].
Karimu: Akanji, what happened? What's the meaning of this?
[Akanji did not want the old woman to hear everything, so he tells the woman to excuse them. She obeys politely without any grudge. Akanji narrates all that had been happening and what he ultimately did to rescue the situation. ]
Karimu: [angry] But why did you do that? when you know the herbalist had warned you

that the pot must not be broken or else… I think you are to blame
Akanji: [deeply hurt] How can you talk like that? Can you accept if it was you?
Karimu: [soberly] Okay, okay. But you know the man had told us that there is no remedy to its
consequences if the rule is broken.
Akanji: [cuts in] So you mean this is how I'm going to be forever.
[As they drag issues, Iya Agba comes in quietly and interrupts]
Iya-agba: [soberly] if I tell you two that I didn't hear what you said then I'll be lying. I heard
everything you said, and I'm happy to tell you that there is a possible solution to the
problem.
[The two being curious both unconsciously and almost at the same time ask what the solution is]
Iya-Agba: [smiling] You see there is a small church which started not long ago in our village. [Facing Karimu] You know about it don't you?
Karimu: [not happy with the mention of church he replied] Yes I do
Iya-Agba: I don't use to believe it also, but it is there I know miracles are real. I tell you if you can
just let me take you there, by the grace of God, it will be over.
[Akanji who ordinarily would not accept such an offer desperately agrees to follow the woman to the place. They managed to support Akanji into his friend's car who drives them all to the church.]
